Cardiff County Hall Debate

Cardiff County Hall Debate – Whitchurch High School Shines

As part of their journey with the Seren Academy, fifteen talented Year 9 pupils from Whitchurch High School took part in a thought-provoking civic engagement event at Cardiff County Hall, joining peers from two other Cardiff schools.

The day centred around a structured debate on the question: “Will limiting vehicle traffic in Cardiff city centre benefit everyone in Cardiff and the wider region?”

With just one hour to prepare, our students crafted six compelling speeches exploring diverse perspectives—from environmental impact and public health to accessibility and economic implications. They thoughtfully examined both sides of the economic argument, weighing the benefits of increased footfall and cleaner air against the challenges for trade and commuting.

In the formal County Meeting Hall, they presented their arguments with confidence and clarity in front of distinguished guests, including:

  • The Lord Mayor, Cllr Adrian Robson
  • Cllr Dan De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport and Planning
  • Cllr Sarah Merry, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education
  • Cllr Wong

All councillors praised the pupils for their articulate and insightful contributions. The event was a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience democratic processes in action and engage meaningfully in shaping the future of their city.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved – you did Whitchurch proud.
