International Rugby Sevens Tournament

Whitchurch High School featured this weekend in the 200th Anniversary celebrations of the invention of the game.  Rugby School, birthplace of the game, hosted teams from across the world for an international Rugby Sevens tournament showing the great sporting talent from across the world.  Teams from schools as far away as New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and Japan competed in the tournament that was held over two days.

Whitchurch High School on day one of the competition, that had 4 groups of 5 teams, finished 3rd to progress into the Cup competition with the remaining two teams relegated to the Bowl.

Our results at the tournament are as follows:

Whitchurch High School         24-26     Merchiston College, Scotland
Whitchurch High School         35-7     Shawnigan Lake School, Canada
Whitchurch High School         12-21   Clifton College, England
Whitchurch High School         39-17   Royal Belfast Academical, Ireland
Whitchurch High School         5-15     Nelson College, New Zealand

Whitchurch High School         12-28   Mount St Mary’s, England (Plate Winners)
Whitchurch High School         38-12   Grange School, Chile

The results meant that our school finished 7th overall from the 20 International teams.

Our Rugby Coordinator Zeb Aporo brought the crowds to a standstill before our game against the New Zealand side Nelson College performing the war dance, the Haka to our opposition.  If you would like to see him perform the Haka, please click here.

All players were outstanding but two players we feel need a mention as Ben Spittle and Mateus Young scored 21 tries between them and tore up many of the opposing team’s defence.

The students who attend this prestigious event are Sol Rees, Jon Beya, Iestyn Hutchins, Matt Baldwin, Sam Neale, Matthew Young, Theo Lewis, Sam Dungey, Finn Pasely, Ben Greenwood, Ethan Hartley, Fraser Britton, Jack Ellis, and Ben Spittle so please congratulate them if you see them in class or around school.

All travelling staff were extremely proud of the boys who were exemplary throughout the weekend.
