19 aspiring year 12 students attended the University of Oxford Open Days at Christ Church College.
The students were up bright and early to depart promptly at 7.30am from school. After a 3 hour journey and a short walk to the college, the pupils arrived and dropped off luggage before a fascinating and informative guided tour of Christ Church College. The tour guides pointed out many interesting facts about the history of the college and the countless world class alumnae produced by this prestigious university. The tour also showed the accomodation used for first year and second year within Christ Church, the magnificent dining hall which inspired Harry Potter, the multitude of green spaces and gardens as well as the Junior Common Room (a social area for students) and lecture halls.
Talks and presentations were visited by the students, some consisting of admissions information and mock interviews, along with 'Meet the Tutors' sessions for individual subject areas where the sixth formers could ask specific questions about the courses and what they can do to further engage with their subjects to become a more successful applicant.
The group then checked into their rooms for that night, which were comparatively more pleasant than the average university accomodation. The sixth form team and students then met for a 2 course dinner, which if you were a student would cost somewhere between £3 and £4. The students were treated to spicy chicken and a strawberry pavlova for dessert!
Breakfast was served the following morning with a selection of a Full English, pastries and cereals. This sufficiently prepared the group for another day of higher education discussions, with lots of time to explore the city and its attractions including sailing down the river, a spot of shopping in Westgate, and The Natural History Museum.
After their 2 days experiencing what it was like to live and learn in Oxford, the students were ever more motivated to strive for the best!
