A group of motivated students from Whitchurch High School had the incredible opportunity to attend a Microsoft DigiGirlz workshop hosted by STABLE, a Cardiff-based company that strives to empower young girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The workshop provided a platform for these young women to explore the latest advancements in technology and gain insights from industry professionals.
The event featured inspiring talks by experts in various STEM disciplines, with a particular focus on cutting-edge advancements such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality. The students listened intently as these industry professionals discussed the incredible possibilities and applications of these emerging technologies.
The Whitchurch High School students discovered a wide array of career pathways in STEM and learned about the abundant job opportunities available in these fields. Witnessing the myriad options available to them, these talented young women were inspired to consider pursuing careers in STEM, fuelled by the knowledge that their passion and dedication could lead to exciting and rewarding professional journeys.
The workshop facilitated hands-on activities, enabling the students to experience first-hand the thrill of working with innovative technologies. One such activity involved coding with Micro: Bits, a pocket-sized programmable device that allows for the creation of various interactive projects. Under the guidance of mentors, the girls learned fundamental coding skills and were encouraged to explore their creativity by developing unique projects.
In addition to coding, the students were presented with an exciting challenge: creating a renewable world within the virtual realm of Minecraft. This exercise not only fostered their problem-solving abilities but also allowed them to envision how technology can be utilised to address real-world challenges such as sustainability and environmental preservation.
The girls from Whitchurch High School emerged from the workshop with a newfound enthusiasm for STEM subjects.
