Healthy Eating Week

For the tenth year, the British Nutrition Foundation asked schools to promote healthy eating week to staff and pupils alike. As in previous years, pupils were provided with information to help them to make healthier lifestyle choices and to see the benefits of choosing these options.

The main focus of this year was 'Eat well for you and the planet!', focusing on the environmental impacts as well as well as eating healthy. Each day had a different theme, with Monday focussing on fibre for meals and snacks, Tuesday targeting the 5 A Day campaign, aiming to raise the intake of fruits and vegetables to 400g as a minimum per day. Further in the week saw days focusing on protein, keeping hydrated and reducing food waste.

Years 8 and 9 tasted roasted chickpeas and protein rich foods as part of Healthy Eating Week on Wednesday for the 'vary your protein' theme. The canned chickpeas were drained, dried, tossed in oil, paprika and termeric and then roasted for 40 minutes. They went down well and were very tasty.

Finally, to end the week on a high, a staff 'Catch Up Friday', organised by Home Economics teacher Mrs Fowler.
